A comedy about a disabled loner who shares his sheltered accommodation with a homeless man off the street is to be made into a BBC Three series.

I'm With Stupid was commissioned by the channel after a pilot episode was a hit with audiences and critics.

The six-part series will be written by Danny Peak - the man behind Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps - and who wrote the pilot.

More than half of the I'm With Stupid cast are registered disabled.

'Funny characters'

Paul Henshall and Mark Benton head the cast of the comedy, which follows the unlikely relationship between Paul, a wheelchair user, and a homeless man called Sheldon.

It is described as a "contemporary Odd Couple style comedy" which explores disability in a funny and honest way.

The series was inspired by the real-life experiences and perspective of up-and-coming writer Peter Keeley, 21, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. He will become a series consultant.

BBC editor of comedy and series executive producer Kenton Allen said: "Danny and Paul collaborated brilliantly on the pilot of I'm With Stupid and they will continue to build on this relationship as they write the series.

"It's fantastic to be able to bring fresh new perspectives and original and funny characters and stories to our viewers in this way."

The BBC said I'm With Stupid continues its commitment to feature more actors with disabilities on screen.
