Work study to focus on ability over disability PDF Print E-mail

The Federal Government has launched a study into the way people with a disability are assessed for their suitability to work.

Up to 1,000 volunteers with disabilities in Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia are being asked to take part.

The Minister for Work Force Participation, Peter Dutton, says the study will look at ways to streamline the assessment process to ensure people get practical support rather than being told the pension is their only option.

Mr Dutton says many people are not being connected to rehabilitation or job assistance programs fast enough.

He says the trial will look at ways to improve the pathways.

"Essentially it's bringing together services like Health Services Australia, Centrelink, other allied health professionals that might be able to assess people's capacity," he said.

He says it is hoped that people will then be linked in with rehabilitation providers and other specialists that would "recognise the potential that people have".
